Welcome to the STHM Montague & Associates Senior Seminar website. As we face the challenges of implementing effective operational systems and planning Career Day, effectively communicating and collaborating between our nine committees’ cooperation has proven to be an extremely important task. This semester will test and develop our professional skills which will better prepare us for the industry upon graduation. The unmatched hands-on experience acquired in Montague and Associates is the key asset in our professional development.

This week the Global Awareness Committee introduced Section 2 to Australia’s geography, tourism, and culture! Enjoy!

GEOGRAPHY:

Australia is bordered by the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean.

There are 6 states in Australia: Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania.

Australia is home to mountain ranges, plains, beaches, deserts, and tropical rainforests.

CULTURE:

Australia has no official language, however English is spoken by 80% of the Australian population.

Cricket has been one of the most important parts of Australia’s sport culture.

TOURISM:

Koalas and Kangaroos can only be found in their natural habitat in Australia.

Some major tourism destination cities in Australia are: Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Darwin, Cairns, Alice Springs, Broome, and Gold Coast.

Six million people have moved to Australia from around the world since 1945.

Argentina

Nationmaster ranked Argentina the 67th country below the poverty line.

As of April 2011 Argentina’s poverty statistics decrease 9.9% however, there are still 168 thousand families living in absolute poverty and an estimated 619 thousand homeless people in the country. (MercoPress)

 Nevertheless there are 2.5 million Argentines living below the poverty line.

Bolivia

80.2% of Bolivia’s population have no access to electricity, 86% have no access to running water, and 50.8% have no sewage system connections.

 Brazil

Nearly two-thirds of children and adults in rural regions of Brazil, the fifth most populated country in the world, lack access to improved sanitation.

Chile

The economy of Chile is ranked as an upper-middle income economy by the World Bank, and is one of South America’s most stable and prosperous nations.  The percentage of Chileans with household incomes below the poverty line – defined as twice the cost of satisfying a person’s minimal nutritional needs – fell from 45.1% in 1987 to 13.7% in 2006, according to government polls.  Critics in Chile, however, argue that poverty figures are considerably higher than those officially published.

Colombia

The humanitarian crisis in Colombia resulting from more than 40 years of internal conflict has displaced an estimated 3 million children and adults.

Ecuador

The country benefited from an oil boom during the 1970s, 21% of the population still live in poverty.

Paraguay

The top 10% of the population holds 43.8% of the national income, while the lowest 10% has 0.5%.

Peru

Nearly one-third of all children in Peru do not attend secondary school.

Suriname

70% of Suriname’s population lives below the poverty line which ranks 9th in the world.

Uruguay

20.9% of households are under the poverty line.

Venezuela

32% of Venezuelans lack adequate sanitation, primarily those living in rural areas.  Child malnutrition (defined as stunting or wasting in children under age five) stands at 17%.  13% of the population lack access to drinking water but this number has been dropping.

Career Day is an annual event that is hosted by the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management.  This event gives students the opportunity to network, seek internships, volunteer opportunities, and learn more about the fields of Tourism & Hospitality Management and Sport & Recreation Management.  Organizations from across the Philadelphia area will be represented giving students a great opportunity to meet with different organizations.
